How do you claim your UIF?

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is a government social security programme that provides funds to support people who were employed and have become unemployed.  If you fall into this category and have the correct documentation, you will be paid between 35-58% of your last salary earned.

Who qualifies for UIF?

  • Any person who works for 24 hours per month or more for an employer
  • Your employer has to be registered with the Fund.  This means that s/he has to have submitted a UI8 or IU8(D) form.  The UI8(D) applies to domestic workers only.
  • Both you and your employer must have made monthly UIF contributions of 1% of your salary each.  This means that the total monthly contribution to the Fund will be 2% of your salary.

Who does not qualify for UIF?

  • Workers who work for less than 24 hours per month
  • Public servants
  • Foreigners who come to South Africa to work
  • Sole owners of businesses (sole proprietors)
  • People who are receiving an old age pension from government
  • Workers who are already receiving money from the Compensation Fund
  • Workers who are working and earning under the terms of the Skills Development Act of 1998

When can you claim for UIF?

You can claim for benefits from the UIF under the following conditions:

  • Unemployment
  • Illness
  • Maternity
  • Adoption
  • Dependant's (death) benefits

How do you apply for UIF benefits?

  • You must apply within 6 months of ending work
  • You will be paid from the date of your application, not before
  • You can only be paid if your services have been terminated by your employer, or if your contract has ended, not if you resign (except in the case of constructive dismissal)
  • You must be capable of work and available should work be offered to you
  • You must report to the Department of Labour when they request you to
