Private schools

Private schools are now an option for more than just the elite. Today, 70 percent of the 400 000 children being educated at private schools are from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

The fee structures at these schools vary widely. Some charge less than R6000 per year for school fees while some charge more than R20 000 per year. Private schools also tend to have smaller classes with the average class size being learners per class.  The smaller class sizes guarantee each child more attention from the teachers, which contributes to a better performance.

Most private schools require a greater degree of parental involvement.  You will probably be required to closely monitor your child's progress, and stay in close contact with the teachers at the school.  You will become part of the school's fund-raising efforts, and may also need to join management forums etc.  This is very beneficial for your child, but does require more time and effort from you.

Things to consider when choosing a school for your child

  • Look at what subjects are being offered.  Does this meet your needs?
  • Look at the extra mural activities the school offers.  If your child is very sporty, make sure the school caters for this.  If your child wants to play piano, go for a school that has a piano teacher.
  • Do some research on the school's pass rate for the last 5 years or so.  Do they have any other academic achievements, like a special mention from the Minister of Education?  Things like this are an indication of a high-performing school.
  • Speak to other parents with children at the school you are considering.  Are they happy with the teachers, the school's management team, their child's performance etc?
