Shelters for abused women
Countless number of women are victims of poverty, violence and abuse. Due to economic deprivation, and scarcity of jobs women tend to depend entirely on the incomes of their husbands or partners. These women's financial dependence on their husbands, partners or male relatives has increased their vulnerability to domestic violence, rape, incest and abuse. Hence, the Department of Social Development has provided a number of shelters to protect these women from perpetrators.
Women in need of protection can contact a shelter directly, or ask a social worker at the nearest district office of the Department, or your nearest police station for assistance in contacting a shelter. These women can also apply for a protection order. Women who are being abused by persons addicted to drugs or alcohol may also consider applying to have their abuser committed to a drug treatment centre. Should the abuser be known to have a licensed firearm, an application to have the firearm removed can also be considered. Cited: Capegateway, 2009.
Women abuse cannot be tolerated thus it's up to women to get out of their comfort zones, seek help and speak out.
