1. Flower arrangement project

This was one of the first projects that RAC launched soon after its establishment in 2005. The project started in July 2005 with Franchesca Abrahams as a project manager. Before the project started, members of the organization had to undergo a mentorship and learnership programme which was part of their skills development initiative. The flower arrangement project aimed to teach RAC members to create flower arrangements for different events. The training program was conducted with help from the Department of Labour over a period of two months.

When the project started in July 2005 the organization did not have a sponsorship to sustain the project. Franchesca approached Kenly Flowers in Woodstock to ask them to donate their waste flowers to RAC. She would pick up boxes of waste flowers every Monday for the Tuesday training session. Thank you  Kenly Flowers; your donation was a big boost for the project!!

RAC takes pride in prompt delivery service to accommodate both social and other important events such as:

  • Weddings (i.e. public and private)
  • Parties (21st, matric ball, etc)
  • Flowers for patients in hospital
  • Church events
  • Funerals

2. Sewing project

The RAC sewing project is led by Evelyn Makatees, a project coordinator in the organization. Evelyn, along with a team of unemployed women that she  teaches how to sew, have secured contracts with local schools. They sew tracksuits for the schools and sportswear for local sports clubs.

3. Baking project

The baking project is managed by Virginia Jacobs, RAC board member. Virginia is a qualified baker, who has got an advanced baking qualification. Some of the products that Virginia bakes include:

  • Cakes (i.e. for wedding, birthdays, and small fancy cakes)
  • Tarts
  • Doughnuts
  • Pies
  • Samoosas
  • Sausage rolls, and spring rolls

Orders can be made 24 hours before an event. Service can be provided for anything between 10 – 200 people.

Crafts

The craft project started in 2006 and soon became a big seller for rAC, espacially over the Christmas period. In this project, the organization manufactures vases, lampshades and many other things. The vases and lampshades are made out of alcohol bottles, but by the time RAC is done with them, they are unrecognisable as such.

Some of the other products that the organization makes include:

  • "Memory boxes" which can be customized based on individual requirements. The organization also makes wine boxes for wine farms.  Buy a memory box for holiday momentoes, or for a few special items belonging to your children that you can give them when they grow up e.g. their first shoes, a baby outfit, school reports etc.
  • Printed tablecloths
  • Custom printed bathroom sets
  • Quilting – bed linen
  • Curtains
