Pam Golding is the founder and the Chairman of Pam Golding enterprises. Pam is also described as the senior member of South African real estate.
When Pam got married to Cecil Golding they did not own a house; they were renting a house in Hout Bay, Cape Town. In 1956 they moved to Kenilworth where they bought a house that was advertised for auction at that time. Today Pam and her family live in Constantia, Cape Town in a house which was built in 1696 , and was owned by Simon van der Stel, a former Governor of the Cape.
Pam developed her business out of nothing. She was a housewife and her husband worked in the publishing industry. Their neighbour at the time spent most of his time relaxing in a hammock in the garden and Pam wondered why. She asked him what he did that allowed him to spend so much time in leisure. He said that he was an estate agent and invited Pam to join him as a sub-agent. He offered her 10 pounds for each sale she made. To her mind, that was a large sum of money, so she agreed. However, things did not go well for her, as her neighbour did little other than sleeping on his hammock, so he never made a single sale!
Pam Golding worked for Syfrets (Private Bank) for five years. Her first property sale was a magnificent Herbert Baker mansion. When she was offered this house to sell, a potential buyer came to mind immediately. She brought buyer and seller together, and she soon had her first sale underway. This motivated her, so she placed an advertisement in the Argus under "Houses for sale" and another under "Houses wanted to buy" with her phone number. She is happy to say that her phone has never stopped ringing since then.
Pam Golding started her own company in 1976 with no capital. At that time the political situation in South Africa was driving foreign investment out of the country. The property market was deemed to be a very high-risk investment for both buyers and sellers. In spite of everything, Pam Golding Properties has grown into a leading South African organisation employing over 1 800 people.
Pam is a wife and mother of three. She is also the winner of several business awards as well as being a member of many international women's organisations. The most prominent members of South African society call Pam when they are buying a property. Her client list includes the president and former president of South Africa, and even the tycoon Sol Kerzner.
