Rugby in the Western Cape
The Western Cape has a proud rugby tradition. Rugby is played in most rural areas and in the major cities like Cape Town. Cape Town also has a number of schools that boast of the best rugby school teams in the country. Schools are also very active in hosting school teams from abroad.
At club level, there are 86 clubs registered with the Western Province Rugby Football Union. This is a membership of 15 000 senior players and about 130 matches every Saturday. Boland, the second provincial rugby team in the Western Cape, has an affiliation of about 10 000 players, while the South Western Districts Rugby Union have more than 3 500 players registered with them.
Western Cape Rugby Institute
The Western Province Rugby Institute in Stellenbosch was established to develop and educate young talented rugby players, who wish to pursue a career professionally. The institute's mission lies in transforming young boys into rugby playing men, by making use of an individually designed functional strength and conditioning programme, which is backed up by proper life style management, diet and image management. The programme is a first of its kind in the world. It has taken core competencies such as decision making, communication, copying with pressure, etc and has integrated it with rugby and conditioning.
