Movie : Knowing
Release Date : 3rd July 2009
Cast : Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, Chandler Canterbury, Lara Robinson
In 1959, a new primary school celebrates its opening by creating a time capsule. Learners are asked to draw or write things on paper, predicting what they think the world will be like 50 years in the future.
One little girl, called Lucinda Embry (Lara Robinson), writes a sequence of numbers instead of a picture drawing. We learn later on in the movie that this is a prediction of every major and future tragedy for the next 50 years with the exact date, location and number of deaths that will occur.
In the present day, all the children at that same primary school get to open the time capsule which was buried in the grounds of the school. They will now see and discover what the kids wrote 50 years ago. One child called Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury), randomly gets Lucinda's envelope with all the mysterious numbers inside. He takes it home and instead of giving it back to the school, his father John Koestler (Nicholas Cage) sees the list of numbers sticking out of his bag and starts to take a look at it. He notices the 9 11 01 date written on it amongst the other numbers and investigates it further.
After studying all the dates, he realizes that the mysterious numbers have predicted the biggest tragedies of the past 50 years with exact precision. He also learns that there are three more predictions that have not yet occurred or happened. Unfortunately, all he ends up being able to do is observe them no matter how hard he tries to stop them. Although he knows the events are going to occur, the list only predicts the date, location and number of deaths at the scene. It doesn't outline the cause of the tragedy or what the tragedy will be so, he's always guessing as to what will happen.
John eventually finds the daughter of Lucinda, Diana Wayland (Rose Byrne) in an effort to get more answers to this puzzle. With the help of Diana and her daughter, Abby Wayland (Lara Robinson), he eventually finds out what the last prediction on the list is and how many people will die.
At the end of this puzzle, the words EE is written backwards, and he realizes that it means "everyone else" and there's nothing he can do to stop it because it involves the sun breaking through the Earth's ozone-layer destroying everything in its path. He also learns that there were mysterious aliens involved in the creation of the prediction, and that they have chosen Caleb and Abby to leave the Earth with them before it is destroyed. John lets them go since he knows there's no other option to save them. As they leave planet Earth, it is shown that there are many other space shuttles also leaving. We realise that others were also chosen and taken to the new planet.
The new planet is Earth-like and looks very peaceful, with an abundance of grass and trees; however, Caleb and Abby are shown to run towards one particular tree, similar to that of Adam and Eve. In the background it is shown how the other space shuttles land, signaling a new beginning.
The visual-effects are wonderful and definitely a must-see if you are a sci-fi lover.
