Things for Free

As from 2009 up until now , the impact of the global crisis has become evident in the South African economy. The GDP has declined, unemployment rate has increased, and food prices are escalating. But how can we cope with these challenges? The answer is simple; lower your standard of living.  But you don't have to give up all the pleasures you can no longer afford because of inflation. There are valuable things that are available for free. Here is a list of things that you can get for free:

1. Computer Software- Instead of buying Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or Access, you can go to www.openoffice.org and you will get comparable — Calc, Writer, Impress, Draw and Base, for MAHALA!

2. Books- there is no better place than your nearest public library

3. Tap water- the tap water is safe and healthy. So why pay a lot of money for bottled water

4. Gymnasiums are expensive, jogging around your nearest safe area or riding a bicycle is free.

5. DVDs- you can borrow DVDs from your public library for free.

6. Internet-If you don't have a computer or access to internet connection, why wasting money on internet cafes? The City of Cape Town public libraries have free internet and some even have free wireless access.  Go to SmartCape!

7. Music- go to websites like jango.com or grooveshark.com, as they allow you to listen to anything you like. It's free and legal, so long as you don't download to your hard disk.

8. News-why pay for newspapers when you can read news online on www.iol.co.za , www.mg.co.za, www.dailynews.co.za, www.thetimes.co.za  etc. Or you can get your community newspapers for free at your door step,e.g. Tatler, City Vision, Vukani etc.

9. Ringtones- Go online for a tutorial on making your own.

10. Games- Do you go to the game shop to play games? Not anymore. You can go to www.gamesheep.com or you can search Google for free and downloadable games.
