About Mxit

MXit is a free mobile/PC instant messenging and social networking software application. It allows members to chat to other MXit users anywhere in the world. It also allows users to send text messages to and from mobile phones and PCs using GPRS or 3G instead of using standard SMS technology, which is expensive. You can connect with your Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, AIM, or Windows Live Messenger contacts.

History

Did you know that Mxit was initiated at Stellenbosch University? In 2000, Swist Group Technologies (research and development division), developed a Massive Multiplayer Mobile game. The game was based on SMS and was not successful due to the high cost of SMS. In 2003, the game's functionality was re-assessed and in the latter half of the year the first version of MXit was released as the first mobile instant messenger of its kind in South Africa. In April 2004, Swist's Research & Development division achieved independence as Clockspeed Mobile and on 1 July 2006 the entity became MXit Lifestyle (Pty) Ltd. MXit crossed the boundaries of affordable communication and connected people from around the globe.

However, people should be warned that in social networks like MXit, users have no responsibility to adhere to acceptable social manner. Rumours can be spread, people can create fake identities, a lot of time can be wasted on chat and children can be introduced to pornography. Hence parents should take a responsibility and look after children.
