When the sun is shining and the holidays are in full swing there are very few things better than heading down to the beach to bask in glow of the sun and maybe take a quick dip in the ocean. Here are some helpful hints which will help keep you safe.

  • Only swim in areas where there are lifeguards
  • Obey the posted beach regulations and listen to the lifeguards
  • If you see anything which seems hazardous, tell the lifeguard
  • Never swim alone
  • If you decide to swim a long-distance stay parallel to the beach
  • Keep an eye on any children in your care even if they have floatation devices and there are lifeguards. Accidents can happen in a heartbeat
  • Don't swim in areas with riptides but if you do go and swim in an area with riptides and find yourself caught up in one ??" swim sideways until free and do not swim against the current
  • Do not dive headfirst into unfamiliar waters; rather first determine how deep the water is
  • Avoid swimming near rocks, piers, jetties, groynes and breakwaters. You may be thrown into them by the current
  • If you are in trouble, scream and wave to get someone's attention
  • Leave the scuba-diving to those who are trained, do not attempt it if you do not have the necessary training
  • You should wear footwear to protect your feet
  • Drink water to keep yourself hydrated
  • Wear sunglasses or a cap to protect your eyes
  • Swimming lessons are a great idea
  • Do not drink on the beach. It is illegal, brainless and over the holiday season is a leading cause of drownings
