Houseguest etiquette
Many of us like to take a vacation in winter, often visiting family and friends. Staying with family members or friends can be a great way to spend time with your loved ones and save on hotel expenses. It is a good way to take a break in this difficult economic climate when few people have extra money.
Being a houseguest can be stressful. Before you go on vacation you must think about the do's and don'ts when you visit someone's home.
- You must keep your guest room and bathroom neat and clean. It is not respectful to make extra work for your hosts.
- You must know when to leave. Some hosts might not be explicit; they can weakly say "Don't go". But you must stick to the original terms of the invitation and avoid overstaying your welcome.
- Strip your bed of the sheets and pillowcases and wash them or take them to the laundry. You must always try to keep everything tidy and you must not take anything without permission. Above all, DON'T STEAL.
- Call them when you get safely to your next destination to let them know that you've arrived and thank them again for their hospitality. Also send them a thank you note.
- Send a thank you gift that shows you care. A gift doesn't have to be an expensive item, it can be anything from the heart.
- You should also invite your hosts to stay at your home on a future visit
REMEMBER:
- Think about how you would want a guest to behave in your home, and act accordingly
- If you want to be invited again, be on your best behaviour!
