The holiday's are about to end and the school year is about to start. We hope you have rested up and you are ready for a great school year where you will be working for a brighter future. For Grade R and Grade 1 learners who are starting school for the first time, we hope your first day will be exciting and unforgettable.

Late and lazy mornings, spending lot of time with friends, watching late movies and playing games have vanished. Now it's back to an early morning routine, uniforms and homework. New teachers, new classmates, new subjects or new school are the challenges that you are facing ahead. But what can you do to ease these difficulties?

Prepare yourself

Organise everything the night before - from socks (make sure they are clean and it's the right match) to shirts and stationery. Check today if your uniform still fits you, as you might have outgrown it over the holidays.

Basically, you must avoid a rush on your first morning. You don't want to arrive at school flustered.

Note to Parents

Note for parents

Many parents are feeling the pinch of the high cost of school uniforms, registration fees, transport fees etc. Retailers say that buying patterns are changing. Previously by this time of the year parents would be rushing to the shops for school uniforms. Now parents are increasingly buying their children's school wear all year round.

Some parents might buy fewer items, such as shirts, but now they look for better quality. PEP's merchandise director, Sean Cardinaal, says this is due to the pressures on household budgets.

Cardinaal suggests that if you are buying school uniforms you must buy tougher clothes with stain resistance features, better quality fabrics, bigger hems that allow for alterations and anything that adds value and prolongs the life of the garments.
