Symptoms of Malaria
The first symptoms of malaria are usually very similar to those of flu. The victim will start feeling aches and pains, fever, headache etc. Between 4 to 6 hours after the attack, they will develop a high fever, shaking chills and sweating. After a few days, the victim may experience convulsions as well. A few hours later, there will be a high fever and sweating. Between these episodes, the patient may feel well, depending on the type of malaria that has been contracted. Some forms of malaria are more severe than others, with different prognoses.
Common symptoms of malaria are:
- Arthralgia (pain in joints)
- Headache (pain in head)
- Vomiting
- Feeling very tired or sleepy
- Anemia (low red blood cell levels in the blood)
- Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
- Cough
- Enlargement of liver or spleen (enlargement means it gets bigger)
- Fever
- Sweating
- Chills (feeling very cold)
- Delirium (when people are very confused because of illness. They may look drunk. They may not be able to talk.)
- Coma (when people are not conscious. They look like they are asleep, but they cannot be woken. )
- Fast heart rate
- Low blood pressure
