HIV/AIDS statistics for South Africa
South Africa has the highest number of HIV infections in the world.
It is estimated that five and a half million of South Africans are living with HIV/AIDS. More than half of the infected adults live in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng.
Young women appear to be more at risk of infection than men. In the 15-24 age groups, 90% of new infections were amongst females.
It is estimated that about 1,000 AIDS deaths occur in South Africa everyday.
It is also estimated that approximately 1.8 million South Africans have died from AIDS-related diseases since the epidemic began.
