Treatment
There is no single treatment for cancer. Practitioners have many choices available and should decide which is best for the patient. They often combine several types of treatment for greater effect, taking into account all sorts of factors. The practitioners have to involve the patient in the decision as much as possible. Treatment can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody therapy etc. The selection of treatment depends on the location, condition of the tumor and the phase of the disease, as well as the general state of the patient.
Before selecting any treatment the patient must consider that the goal of the treatment is to completely remove the cancer without damaging the body. This can be done but there are possibilities that the cancers can invade nearby tissues or spread to distant sites. This often limits the effectiveness of the treatment. The effectiveness of chemotherapy is often limited by toxicity to other tissues in the body. Radiation can also cause damage to normal tissue.
