City to host annual Recreation Festival
The Sport and Recreation Department, in partnership with the Social Development Department, will host Cape Town's annual Recreation Festival on Saturday, 8 October. Over 3 000 children and their families are expected to participate in this initiative that aims to get them active in sporting activities other than the mainstream sports of soccer, rugby and cricket.
Children of all ages can participate in a five kilometre fun run/walk, adventure recreation, indigenous games, jumping castle, giant games, mind games, five-a-side soccer and a kiddies' corner, while the rest of the family enjoys a variety of entertainment.
The Recreation Festival's goal is to encourage family involvement in recreation activities and create an opportunity for children from all districts and communities to interact with each other in a fun non-competitive environment. Initiatives such as this one encourage other sports and recreation activities to grow their membership, with the result that more children become more active in different sporting codes.
The department will make use of the City's highly regarded and dedicated volunteers from its diverse volunteer programmes.
