The Uitsig Reading Room is a Mayoral project of the City Of Cape Town, aiming to bring technology and its many benefits to disadvantaged communities.

The Reading Room was launched by the Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, in February 2009.  It has a small collection of children's books, and several tables and chairs at which you can read and study.  Most importantly, it has 10 computers for public use, free of charge.

For now, the Reading Room has no internet access and printers, but it is being used for computer literacy training, typing of CVs and business plans etc.  The manager is very aware that this is a limitation for users and is trying hard to remedy this situation.  Youth from Uitsig and its neighbouring areas attend classes at this facility.  They are called Community Development Ambassadors (CDA).  After their computer literacy training is complete, they will go to the Youth Development Centre for further training, and this will help them find jobs.  In the evenings, the facility manager runs computer literacy training courses for adults.  He has 45 adults attending these courses already.

This facility is still relatively quiet in the mornings, and is open to everyone, so if you want to learn more about how to use a computer properly, do pay them a visit and see if you can join one of their classes.  Don't be put off by the lack of internet access and printers. There is still much that you can do until this is enabled.
