The Mitchell`s Plain Festival: 25-27 November 2011

The first ever Mitchell's Plain festival was staged in 2009 to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Mitchell's Plain, a community with an estimated population of 700 000 people. The inaugural event was attended by President Jacob Zuma, Premier Helen Zille, various cabinet ministers, Directors General and more than 15 000 people. More than R4 million worth of free and favorable publicity has been generated for Mitchell's Plain as a result of this event. It also created at least 200 part time employment opportunities for persons from Mitchell's Plain and Khayelitsha. Although Mitchell's Plain is a development designed by the apartheid government our people have risen to the challenges they were faced with and made this township a vibrant and exciting place to live, work and play.

The area have close to 60 primary and secondary schools, 5 post offices, three major precincts (Town Centre, Westgate Mall and Promenade Mall) and more than ten smaller convenient centers, which provides at least 700 opportunities/ trading space to formal business houses and SMME's in the area. the area is also home to more than 2000 informal traders through the community. All major brands and stores are represented in this community, including Shoprite Checkers, Pick 'n Pay, Wool Worth's, Clicks, ABSA Bank, Standard Bank, FNB, Nedbank, etc. Practically all essential government services and products are available within the boundaries of this community, including clinics, hospitals, Department of Home Affairs, SAPS, the Department of Justice and Department of Labor.

This year (2011) the festival will not be attended by President Jacob Zuma and Premier Helen Zille, but Mayor Patricia de Lille will be there. There are many activities taking place and competitions, with total prizes to the value of R250 000 up for grabs!
