The Cape of Storms

Cape Storms

In the past years, winter in Cape Town has always been filled with thunderstorms, heavy rains and strong winds. This year is set to be no different, perhaps a bit worse than years before, hence it is called the "Cape of Storms".

To ensure you are warm, snug and safe from these conditions, we have compiled a list of items to get you through this winter season.

  1. Ensure that all leaks are fixed in your roof and check continuously for leaks.
  2. Hang heaver curtains (lined) to ensure the heat is kept inside your home during cold winter nights.
  3. Wear warm clothes and ensure that your hands and feet are covered.
  4. Buy quality blankets that will keep you warm during the night.
  5. Use electricity sparingly and try and avoid using heaters that will cause a strain on the national grid.
  6. Don't leave candles/paraffin burners unattended - this can cause fires that can destroy your home and the ones close to yours.
  7. Check the weather and dress accordingly.
  8. If it is raining heavily, try and stay indoors and off the roads, as it may be hazardous to drive or walk.
  9. When you have come from outside and are wet, remove those clothes immediately to avoid getting sick with a cold.

If you have an emergency related to the weather, or any other emergency that the City Of Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management Centre can help you with, dial 107 from Telkom land-lines or  021 480 7700 from cellphones to get through to this service.

Report flooding, blocked drains and service interruptions to the City's all-hours Technical Operations Centre at  0860 103 054
