Employment Opportunities for 2011 Matriculants

 1. The Purpose:

 To give 1000 of the 2011 matriculants the opportunity to work in the Western Cape Government (WCG) for a period of one year to obtain some work experience and training.

 2. The Target Audience:

 Matriculants who are not going to study further and who are unemployed.

 3. Who Qualifies?

 2011 Grade 12 Learners who passed the National Senior Certificate (NSC))

Matriculants must be based in the Western Cape and obtained NSC in the WC

Matriculants must be a South African citizens

 4. The Project

Will provide 1000 matrics of 2011 with gainful experiential learning within the 13 Western Cape Government Departments across the entire province from 1 March 2012 until 31 December 2012.

 5. The Process

Principals of Senior Secondary Schools have been informed of the PAY project by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

Principals will ask teachers who have taught the current matriculants to nominate 12 candidates who:

  • are not going to study,
  • may have an interest in the working in government departments (public sector)
  • have no network or support to help them make life choices about careers or work or studying.

Application forms are available at the schools and on the website where learners can follow the Premier's Advancement of Youth links.

Selection of schools for the programme

The choice of schools for this programme will depend on the location of the work placements within the public sector. Schools and learners who are located closest to the work placements will receive preference. The proximity between work and home should avoid drop-out due to inconvenience.

7. The Outcome

To have, after a year, 1000 young people with contactable references on their CV's, having obtained a set of skills and experience to make them more marketable.
