A personal account for a career choice
Making a career decision is not an easy task to do. Many people fall into the trap of choosing the wrong career. Why do we make wrong career decisions? There are many possible reasons for this. The presentation and visuals during career exhibitions might be confusing and misleading. You might be attracted by the presentation without getting a clear idea of the course being referred to and regret later. Some learners might be influenced by friends and families. Whatever the reason for it, an incorrect career choice, while not irreversible, can lead to much heartache.
While I was doing my matric I went to a career exhibition which was held at one of our tertiary institutions. During the exhibition I was striked by a very well-displayed stall. I was attracted by the course called Somatology/Cosmetology; the name was new to me. The Somatology students were dressed well in smart uniform. I had some fantasies, seeing my self dressed in that uniform. The requirements were maths and physics and I was impressed again. I thought that every course which requires maths and physics would be interesting and challenging. I applied for the course but fortunately my application was rejected. Later I realised that Somatology was not really my passion, it was not what I thought it was. I was just attracted by the presentation/ display at the exhibition. In the end, I was so grateful that they rejected my application, because I may have embarked on a course that I didn't like and later I would have dropped out.
Therefore it is wise to get all the necessary information about the course you intend to take and explore all the opportunities.
