Homemaker

A homemaker is the person who handles household responsibilities as their main daily activity. While this is not seen as a job because there is no financial remuneration this in nonetheless a taxing task.

This job is usually done by an adult member of the household such as the parent of any minor children. A homemaker is generally responsible for cooking, cleaning, household shopping, general health of the family, maintenance of the house, household budget and care of any minors. These tasks can be extremely difficult on a limited budget and so often creativity in the kitchen and house will be needed to stretch those few Rands.

At times a person will have a choice over whether to pursue a monetary rewarding career or to stay at home whilst their partner earns the money. In other cases lack of employment opportunities force a person to remain at home and become the homemaker.

The important thing to realise here is that there is no shame in being a homemaker as often the household relies upon you to care for it. If there are children you must help them with schoolwork, you must protect the house from germs and you must attempt to make the house as comfortable and happy as possible.

A homemaker can be male or female. The old idea of it being the sole domain of women has fallen to the wayside as more women become if not the sole breadwinners then the primary ones. Men have also decided to stay at home to care for the house. It does not make them any less of a man.
