Chartered Accountant
Becoming a Chartered Accountant in South Africa (CA (SA)) will open the doors to an exciting and challenging career. You will learn skills and gain knowledge that will make you flexible, give you global mobility and great earning potential in a number of business fields.
If you wish to study to become a CA (SA), you must have Core Mathematics. You then have to obtain a Matric exemption as well as a level 4 pass in Core Mathematics and a good pass in English is also recommended. The English is needed to have a better understanding of the concepts which you will be taught. You must also ensure that the university is accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
You must then register for a B Com Accounting degree or an equivalent CA (SA) undergraduate qualification at a SAICA accredited university. Once you have completed your degree you will be required to complete your Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA). This course focuses on Accounting, Auditing, Taxation and Financial Management. The course takes a minimum of one year and must be completed at a SAICA accredited university.
Upon completion of your CTA, you are then eligible to enter into a 3-year learnership with a Registered Training Office (RTO) (to specialise in auditing) or an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) (to specialise in financial management).
After completing your learnership there will be two exams to write. These are the Qualifying Examinations (QE 1 and QE 2). Once you have passed these exams and successfully completed your training, you may register with SAICA and begin to use the CA (SA) designation and start your life as a Chartered Accountant.
