Mitchells Plain Digital Business Centre (DBC)

The Mitchells Plain Digital Business Centre (DBC) officially opened its doors in January 2007. The centre was launched by the Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Helen Zille on the 19th January 2007. The Mitchells Plain DBC, which cost an estimated amount of R3 million, was established to provide easy access to information through facilities such as telephone, fax, copying machine and Internet connected computers to the Mitchells Plain community at large.

The centre is a joint project between three departments within the City of Cape Town viz. Information Systems & Technology [IS&T] E-Governance Unit, Urban Renewal Programme and the Department of Economic & Human Development.

Its home will be in the highly visible Mitchells Plain Town Centre, where it will be prominently sited and easily accessible to the surrounding business community. The building from which the business centre operates has been funded by the Urban Renewal Program and the ICT (Information & Communication Technology) equipment provided by the IS&T Department. The facility has been completely outfitted by the departments of Economic and Human Development and Urban Renewal, who will also provide the ongoing operating budget.

The Digital Business Centre will provide facilities such as computers with low cost internet connectivity; business development information; helpdesk, advice, and training; and a range of business support services for entrepreneurs, small business owners and unemployed individuals seeking to enter the business world.

The management of the facility will be contracted out to a small business, which will also itself create new employment.

It is an ideal location for the new business centre, in an area that is home to approximately 1 million people and grossly under-served in terms of information access. A total of 14 computers will be available to community members. A dedicated manager will oversee operations and provide first-line user support.
